課程概述

This course is designed to introduce NTU students to university-level English. We will continue to read and discuss a series of texts featuring short stories and proses written by award-winning American writers of Asian ancestries including Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Indian and Filipino. Students will have a chance to apply the language skills they have learned through ten listening transcriptions, one individual presentation, two midterms and, near the end of this course, through a group presentation in the form of a micro film. We will look into issues of memory and identity by examining how Asian American experiences gain meaning in contemporary culture and how the selected texts resonate with aspects of our lives.

The specific nature of these assignments will be discussed in the first week of classes. Please note again that these assignments may change depending on the needs and interests of students.

說明
1.
Attendance and participation
10%
Please attend regularly and be punctual to the classes, which will begin at 12:30 every Tuesday. Absence more than three times without acceptable reasons will lead to a fail in this class.
2.
Ten listening transcripts
20%
Students will be given a link that includes the video for transcribing as a take-home assignment every week. The transcripts should be printed out and taken to the class in the following week.
3.
Two midterms (and two essays)
40%
There will be one question for each section, which will be given by the teacher two weeks before the due date of the essay.
4.
One individual presentation
10%
Individual presentation should be presented based on the keywords and articles for each section. Each group should bring a 40-minute presentation before the discussion starts every week. Since each section will be introduced with three keywords and an article respectively, each individual presentation should be presented in two parts for the corresponding weeks by each group.
5.
One group presentation (including peer evaluation)
20%
A group presentation will be presented in the form of a micro film. There will be five group presentations in total, based on the five sections introduced this semester.
